#3: Doing it
So last week was mostly about assessing where I’d left things but this week I’ve been able to actually DO stuff which has been great.
A few pieces had been completely lacquered prior to my hiatus and just needed to be finished with metal so I got out some urushi, thinned it down a bit, got my brush to a nice point and tried to breath as little as possible while doing the final strokes. I lacquered and dusted 4 small side plates, a milk jug, a small serving dish, a fine China cup, and a Lurpak butter dish. They’re all now sat in my makeshift Muro with a cup of water to create a humid environment for the lacquer to cure in before I brush off the excess brass and polish them up. That usually only takes a couple of days but I’ll be leaving them until next sunday when I return to the desk.
On the administrative side, I’ve also been designing some business cards so that I can give them to potential clients or shops. I went through a few design iterations and as tempted as I was to use Comic Sans or Papyrus (if it’s good enough for James Cameron it’s good enough for me!), I settled on a fairly simple and clean look. I’d wanted to include “Good craic” on the front for the Celtic reference and pun as I’m based in Scotland but it was too hit and miss amongst the people I asked so it went in the bin.
I’m ambitiously stating that I offer traditional repairs (Hon Kintsugi) as well as modern repairs (Kan’i Kintsugi) because this should hopefully be the case by the end of the year but more on that as things develop.
