Cornish Coast bowl - brass
A decorative ceramic Cornishware-style bowl repaired using a mixture of modern and traditional Japanese kintsugi techniques including traditional urushi lacquer and brass imported from specialists in Japan. The piece has been fixed with high strength epoxy and the join has been painted with layers of urushi lacquer before dusting with finely ground Japanese brass to finish. This mixture of modern and traditional methods ensures that the piece is durable and useable whilst still ensuring that the traditional process is maintained as much as possible. This differs from most widely available "kintsugi" pieces which are made using resin mixed with mica powder, often resulting in a blobby, less delicate finish.
We import our metal powders and lacquer from specialist producers in Japan to ensure that it is of the highest quality and provides a finish that will last and celebrate the story of the item.
This is a unique piece, restored by hand in Scotland.
Whilst the epoxy can withstand a wide min/max temperature range (-40°c - +121°c) we recommend avoiding exposing the piece to high heats as this may make the joins fail. Do not heat the piece in an oven and under no circumstances should it be used in a microwave due to the metal finish.
Cleaning
The piece can be cleaned with a dry fresh cloth to remove dust if used as an ornament, or warm soapy water and a soft sponge if it has been used for food. Abrasive scourers or sponges may damage the finish and are not recommended. After washing, it should be dried immediately to avoid brass tarnishing.
